It has been a major concern among school deans and even those in the government that fewer students are taking college engineering courses. This decline in enrolment figures has a marked effect in the quality of civil works in a country in the long run. Civil engineering contributes to a nation’s progress in the form of design, construction and maintenance of its various infrastructure projects. These often large public works projects are roads, bridges, dams, airports and seaports. In private practice, civil engineering and architecture encompass the construction of individual residential homes and high-rise office towers. It is called civil (civilian) engineering to distinguish it from military engineering. Famous architects and civil engineers make their mark by designing and constructing buildings with very unique designs, sometimes inviting controversy.
